Who does Landon DuPont style his game after?

University of Michigan defenseman Landon DuPont will make his U.S. college hockey debut next week as the 2026-27 NCAA season kicks off.

The 17-year-old is the top prospect for the 2027 NHL Entry Draft, and after two dominant seasons in the Western Hockey League with the Everett Silvertips, the Calgary native announced in June that he would spend his draft year in Ann Arbor and suit up for the Wolverines.

DuPont recorded 133 points over two WHL seasons, including a 73-point campaign in 2025-26 that helped fuel the Silvertips winning the league championship and a berth in the Memorial Cup.

On Friday’s episode of Leafs Morning Take, Nick Alberga and former NHL forward Jay Rosehill chat with DuPont to discuss which present-day NHL defenders does the newest Michigan Wolverine styles his game after.

Jay Rosehill: Obviously right now in the NHL, there’s a lot of really dynamic defenseman, really offensive guys who get up in the play and push that pace. Is there a guy who you mould your game after? Also, what types of things are you guys to work on in college to try and round out your game?

Landon DuPont: I like to watch a lot of different defenseman. Obviously, like you said, there’s a lot of up-and-coming “D” who have lots of skill. I like to watch guys like Quinn Hughes and (Cale) Makar, but I also like watching guys like Jaccob Slavin and Jake Sanderson, just to see how hard they play and how good they are with their sticks.

I think that’s the biggest thing I need to work on. I’m going to be pushed because guys are a lot bigger and strong … I think learning to defend those guys and working on my gap and stick placement will be huge.
