Load management will be key for Bobrovsky in Toronto

The Toronto Maple Leafs have already had a massive first offseason under new general manager John Chayka, swinging for marquee trades and approaching free agency aggressively, while also adding Gavin McKenna with the first overall pick in the NHL Entry Draft.
Yet, while there’s plenty of hope after signing veteran netminder Sergei Bobrovsky, there remains doubt about how much he might actually be able to play. The 37-year-old played 52 games with the Florida Panthers in 2025-26 but struggled at points.
On a recent episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, analyst Steven Peters joined co-hosts Tyler Yaremchuk and Carter Hutton to break down whether the new goaltender may have a measured, pre-planned approach to his first season in Toronto.
Tyler Yaremchuk: Honestly, like that’s why I was surprised the Maple Leafs traded Denis Hildeby to be after they signed Bobrovsky, because I kind of thought there was a world where they were going to do like an “ultra load management,” like, hey Bobrovsky, you’re playing 42 of the 84, and for 20 of those other games you’re not.”
Steve Peters: I think goaltender management is going to be huge, and that’s why we’re seeing so many teams with that third goalie on the roster, at least today, and I do think Bobrovsky’s load management is going to be important, just like it is for Andrei Vasilevskiy in Tampa Bay, the guy that wants to play every single game, but by the time you get to the playoffs, man, they get, they get a little worn out, they get a little tired, they’re more susceptible to injury. So I do think that the management of Bobrovsky is going to be huge for Toronto.
Having said that, he’s going to play, and they have to win. Like, if you’re going to make all these big moves, you better have Bobrovsky in on Saturday nights, playing all the big games. So, I think it’s going to be an interesting balance to see if he can carry that load and what he’ll be like in game one of the playoffs after going through that difficult 84-game season.
