One of the Los Angeles Kings’ newest members may be out of the lineup before even playing a game with his new team.

Corey Perry, entering his 21 NHL season, appeared to injure himself during an informal skate with teammates at the Toyota Sports Performance Center in El Segundo, Calif., on Friday, according to Mayor’s Manor.

Mayor’s Manor has confirmed through multiple sources that the play in question appeared to take place along the boards, and it wasn’t immediately clear if he went down as the result of catching a rut on the ice or if it was a result of contact from another player,” Mayor’s Manor Founder John Hoven wrote. “Eventually, Perry was said to be taken off the ice in a wheelchair for further medical evaluation.”

The report comes after Perry signed a one-year contract with the Kings on July 1, a deal with a base salary of $2 million that could net him another $2 million in performance bonuses.

Perry spent the 2024-25 season with the Edmonton Oilers, scoring 19 goals and recording 11 assists for 30 points in 71 games. He also scored 10 goals and four assists for 14 points in 22 Stanley Cup Playoff games during the Oilers’ Stanley Cup Final run.

Taken by the Kings’ arch rival Anaheim Ducks with the No. 28 overall pick in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, Perry spent the first 14 years of his NHL career in Orange County, scoring 372 goals and 404 assists for 776 points in 988 regular-season games. He helped the Ducks earn their first Stanley Cup championship in 2007.

Perry’s best season came in 2010-11, scoring 50 goals and 48 assists for 98 points, leading Anaheim to the playoffs and winning both the Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy and the Hart Trophy.

When asked by reporters how he could win over Kings fans after spending so much of his career trying to beat them, he said it’s all on the ice.

“I’m just going to let my play speak and go from there. I’ve got to get them on my side,” he said.

In 1,392 career NHL games, Perry has 448 goals and 487 assists for 935 points with the Oilers, Ducks, Chicago BlackhawksTampa Bay LightningMontreal Canadiens and Dallas Stars. In 237 career Stanley Cup Playoff games, Perry has 64 goals and 77 assists for 141 points.

Perry went on to appear in five more Stanley Cup Finals, doing so with the Stars in 2020, the Canadiens in 2021, the Lightning in 2022, then the Oilers in 2024 and 2025.

In junior, Perry had a season for the ages with the OHL’s London Knights in 2004-05, scoring 40 goals and 73 assists for 113 points in 66 regular-season games. In the playoffs, he scored seven goals and 15 assists for 22 points, leading the team to both an OHL Championship and a Memorial Cup title.

Internationally, Perry won Olympic gold medals in 2010 and 2014, the World Cup of Hockey in 2016, the World Championship in 2016 and the World Junior Championship in 2005.
