Marc-Andre Fleury wants to remain a Golden Knight

Marc-Andre Fleury wants to finish his career as a member of the Vegas Golden Knights.

We don’t know when that might be, but Fleury said in an end-of-season talk with media on Saturday that he wants to keep playing in Vegas alongside Robin Lehner…

“We just finished a couple days ago and it’s still on my mind,” Fleury said. “Frustrating to see Montreal advance and think if we can be there. I haven’t given much thought to the future, but it’s always been in my heart to stick around and finish up here.

“[Me and Robin Lehner’s] relationship grew over the season. We got along very good. As goalies, that’s something you strive for is winning games, but also not giving up too much. I think both of us, we accomplished that this year.”

One year ago, the Golden Knights had the league’s biggest goaltending controversy. The team acquired Lehner ahead of the 2020 trade deadline and Fleury’s agent, Allan Walsh, later tweeted a photo of a sword going through his client’s back.

Here we are now and Fleury and Lehner appear to be working incredibly well together. The two of them won the 2021 Jennings Trophy for the fewest goals against by a goaltending tandem and Fleury is nominated for the Vezina Trophy.

There has been plenty of discussion around Fleury’s future in Vegas since the Golden Knights were eliminated by the Montreal Canadiens in the semi-finals. Fleury has one year left on his contract with a $7,000,000 cap hit and a 10-team no-trade list. The Golden Knights are pressed tight against the salary cap ceiling and moving Fleury’s contract would help them add a much-coveted top-line centre in the off-season.
