A familiar face will be putting together the team representing Canada in one of hockey’s longest-standing tournaments.

On Monday, Hockey Canada announced that former NHL team executive Marc Bergevin will be the general manager for the Canadian National Men’s Team at the 2025 Spengler Cup.

Bergevin, who is currently in his fourth full season as a senior advisor with the Los Angeles Kings, a role he has held since 2022, will be part of the staff at an international tournament for the first time since he was with the management group for Team Canada at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey, which saw the host nation win gold.

Prior to joining the Kings, the Montreal native was the GM and executive vice president of hockey operations for the Montreal Canadiens for parts of 10 seasons. There, helped the Habs advance to the Stanley Cup Playoffs six times, including the team’s improbable run to the final in 2021.

Bergevin also played 1,191 NHL regular-season games, along with helping Canada win gold at the 1994 IIHF Men’s World Championship.

Joining Bergevin will be former Tampa Bay Lightning assistant general manager Stacy Roest. The former NHLer was on the staff that helped put together back-to-back Stanley Cup champions in 2020 and 2021. The Creston, B.C. native also represented his country at six Spengler Cups, bringing home the championship in 2003.

Hockey Canada’s senior vice president of hockey operations, Scott Salmond, states that these are the right two men for the job.

“Marc and Stacy have extensive experience as executives in the NHL and AHL, and we are excited for them to bring their expertise to Canada’s National Men’s Team for the 2025 Spengler Cup,” Salmond said in a release. “They not only bring a wealth of front office experience, but many years of professional and international playing experience, and we look forward to working with them as we build a staff and roster to represent Canada in Switzerland.”

Canada will begin play in Davos on Boxing Day as they take on the U.S. Collegiate Selects Team, with the loser facing the hosts the following day.
