Minnesota Wild defenceman Matt Dumba, Philadelphia Flyers forward Oskar Lindbolm and San Jose Sharks forward Patrick Marleau have been named the finalists for the Bill Masterton Memorial trophy.

The award is handed out annually to “the player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.” Local chapters of the Professional Hockey Writers Association submitted nominations for the trophy with the top three vote-getters being designated as finalists.

Dumba was the King Clancy trophy winner last season for his work in co-founding the Hockey Diversity Alliance speaking out about racism in hockey, as well as work on a number of other community initatives. Despite facing backlash and online hate, Dumba continued his work this year hosting inaugural Matt Dumba Hockey Without Limits Camp.

“I have a platform to make a change and make a difference. It’d be a shame if I let that go to waste,” Dumba told the Minneapolis Star Tribune. “I think anyone that you talk to and who’s been there on the ground supporting these kids and hearing their stories, I think that they would say the same. The smiles, the hope, just the energy that we’re cultivating here is starting to change here in Minnesota, but I hope it’s across North America and eventually the world.”

Lindbolm is a finalist for the award in his second straight year. In Dec. 2019, he was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare type of bone cancer. On July 2, 2020, Lindbolm rang a ceremonial bell ending his treatment and returned to the Flyers lineup for two playoff games in September. This year, he played 50 of 56 games scoring eight goals and 14 points.

Marleau, meanwhile, had lots to celebrate in 2020-21. He overtook Gordie Howe for most regular-season games played in NHL history, and later became the fourth play to skate in 900 consecutive games. Marleau finished his 23rd NHL season 23rd in the league in career goals (566) and 50th in career points (1,197).
