McKenna’s Matchup of the Day: Apr. 14 – Marc-Andre Fleury vs. Scott Wedgewood

Former NHL netminder Mike McKenna provides his Daily Faceoff Starting Goalie Matchup of the Day for Thu. Apr 14., 2022:

Why I like this matchup:

Dallas goaltender Scott Wedgewood will start his second game in a row after shutting out the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday night. He’s earned the net – but what about Jake Oettinger, who has carried the Stars all season? Drama is unfolding in Dallas, but it’s all about winning. The Rick Bowness-led team has to make the Stanley Cup playoffs.

What to watch for:

Starting Wedgewood is a bold move considering the season Oettinger has had. But the journeyman netminder was fantastic against the Lightning just two nights ago. Obviously Stars coach Bowness believes Wedgewood gives his team the best chance to win tonight against a determined Minnesota Wild.

Wedgewood is an active goaltender who likes to play at the top of his crease. He was a difference maker for the Arizona Coyotes in 26 games this season before coming to Dallas at the NHL trade deadline. Since arriving, the 29-year old from Brampton, Ontario has posted a 3-0-1 record and .922 save percentage.

Things have gone swimmingly for Marc-Andre Fleury since arriving in Minnesota at the NHL trade deadline. He’s won four of five games and owns a .926 save percentage in his time with the Wild.

What fantasy owners should do:

Wedgewood has been a quality pickup for fantasy owners, but the Wild have been so strong lately that I’d be cautious starting him. And that’s a big reason why Marc-Andre Fleury is a safe bet: Minnesota should win this game. But Fleury’s shot total may not be high. Regardless, I would start him.

Bottom line for Marc-Andre Fleury:

Dallas is desperate for points and will look to start the game with energy. A strong first period by Fleury is critical.

Bottom line for Scott Wedgewood:

Ignore any outside pressure and just play. Wedgewood is at his best when he’s playing loose.
