McKenna’s Matchup of the Day: Apr. 4 – Linus Ullmark vs. Elvis Merzlikins

Former NHL netminder Mike McKenna provides his Daily Faceoff Starting Goalie Matchup of the Day for Mon. Apr 4., 2022:

Why I like this matchup:

Boston Bruins goalie Linus Ullmark is riding a four-game winning streak, while Columbus Blue Jackets netminder Elvis Merzlikins has lost five starts in a row. Will either streak end?

What to watch for:

All eyes have been on rookie Jeremy Swayman in Boston, but Ullmark has quietly gone about his business, racking up a 21-9-2 record this season. His .910 save percentage isn’t eye-catching, and Ullmark didn’t have the best month of February, but I think he’s a big reason for the Bruins’ success. He and Swayman have formed a tight bond and a formidable tandem.

Ullmark is best when he’s patient. I like how active his hands are and that he rarely defaults to simply blocking. And Ullmark has been healthy this year, an ingredient that was often missing previously in his career as a member of the Buffalo Sabres.

Manning the blue paint hasn’t been easy in Columbus this season for Merzlikins. He’s faced an average of 35 shots against per 60 minutes, tops in the NHL. Yet Merzlikins has managed to post a 22-18-5 record. I love his compete level and how much his game has matured over the past few seasons.

Merzlikins has always had a tangible swagger to his game, but the emotional factor has largely been removed. I think he’s learned how to manage the everyday demands of being an NHL goaltender, all while being under duress behind a defensively loose Blue Jackets team. As long as he remains in control during the game – playing between his posts – Merzlikins has routinely given his team a chance to win.

What fantasy owners should do:

I wouldn’t advise starting Merzlikins unless your team needs saves. The Bruins are third in the NHL at 35.8 shots per game; it’s likely Merzlikins will be busy. Ullmark has been on a nice run lately and has provided steady value in fantasy. Starting him is a safe bet.

Bottom line for Linus Ullmark:

Don’t sleep on the CBJ. The Blue Jackets are hungry for a win and have the ability to score in bunches.

Bottom line for Elvis Merzlikins:

Pay attention in pre-scout meetings: the Bruins’ power play is efficient yet somewhat predictable. And be prepared to defend the crease: Boston will crash the net.
