McKenna’s Matchup of the Day: Apr. 6 – Ilya Samsonov vs. Jeremy Swayman

Former NHL netminder Mike McKenna provides his Daily Faceoff Starting Goalie Matchup of the Day for Thu. Apr. 6, 2023:
Why I like this matchup:
Because tonight’s game might very well be a preview of what’s to come during the Stanley Cup playoffs. The Bruins and Leafs are almost certain to finish 1-2 in the Atlantic Division. They key difference is that Samsonov is the likely starter for the Leafs, while Swayman will begin the postseason behind Boston No.1 Linus Ullmark.
What to watch for:
While Samsonov hasn’t played poorly lately, he still only has three wins in his last eight appearances. And he was forced into action recently when Leafs goalie partner Matt Murray went down with yet another injury. I think the pressure is on for Samsonov to finish the regular season on a high note. Especially with rookie netminder Joseph Woll having won four games in a row for Toronto. Realistically, Samsonov has earned the crease with a .915 save percentage and a record or 25-10-4. But things are about to get serious for the Maple Leafs, and expectations are high. I think Samsonov has a pretty good feel for the game, but his footwork is still a little loose for my tastes. If he can crisp up his movements, Samsonov still has untapped potential.
At the start of the season, I thought Swayman had a solid chance to grab the No.1 job for the Bruins. But Ullmark came out of the gates on fire, and Swayman had a slow start. The result is that he’s appeared in 33 games to Ullmark’s 47. But don’t discount what Swayman has done for the Bruins this season. He’s gone 21-6-4 and posted four shutouts in a supporting role. Sure, the Bruins are one of the best teams in the NHL’s modern era. But I think Swayman and Ullmark have played a big role. There are still moments when I think Swayman gets too wide in his stance and it hurts his lateral movement. But his reads have gotten better with experience. And I love the bond he has with Ullmark.
What fantasy owners should do:
Samsonov and Swayman have both been horses for fantasy owners. Start them both.
Bottom line for Ilya Samsonov:
Despite the Maple Leafs employing a degree of load management in front of him – and thus a lesser lineup – Samsonov needs a strong finish to the regular season.
Bottom line for Jeremy Swayman:
He’s never lost sight of the big picture this season, and that needs to continue.
