McKenna’s Matchup of the Day: Dec. 15 – Pyotr Kochetkov vs. Martin Jones

Former NHL netminder Mike McKenna provides his Daily Faceoff Starting Goalie Matchup of the Day for Thu. Dec. 15, 2022:

Why I like this matchup:

Pyotr Kochetkov and Martin Jones have been winning machines. Combined, they have 20 victories in 32 opportunities.

What to watch for:

Kochetkov is coming off back-to-back shutouts for the Hurricanes as he builds a case to become the team’s No.1 goaltender. He is armed with a four-year contract extension that kicks in after the 2022-23 season. Kochetkov’s .926 save percentage and 7-1-4 record are going to make it hard for Carolina GM Don Waddell to send the talented Russian netminder back to the AHL.

I like Kochetkov’s structure but I think he really excels with his reads and athleticism. Kochetkov tracks the puck well. And more than anything, the big stage of the NHL hasn’t fazed him one bit. He can handle the pressure.

I’m not sure the last time an NHL goaltender won six of seven starts while posting an .855 save percentage. But that’s the reality for Jones. The Kraken goaltender has allowed just shy of four goals per game during that span but Seattle has been able to score as needed.

Watching the Kraken is hard on my old goalie eyes. Jones hasn’t gotten much help. But he’s managed to win games due to some critical saves – especially during the third period. Seattle has allowed just 24 goals in the final frame – tied for third-best in the NHL.

What fantasy owners should do:

I’d play Kochetkov and Jones. Kochetkov has allowed two or fewer goals in seven of 11 starts. And the Hurricanes have really struggled to find the back of the net.

Bottom line for Pyotr Kochetkov:

It’s his first time facing the Kraken. He needs to pay close attention during pre-scout. Seattle has skilled players that attack with speed.

Bottom line for Martin Jones:

Wins are great but he needs to string together some strong performances. The Kraken won’t go anywhere during the Stanley Cup playoffs with average goaltending.
