Former NHL netminder Mike McKenna provides his Daily Faceoff Starting Goalie Matchup of the Day for Tue. Jan. 17, 2023:

Why I like this matchup:

Jones has been a winning machine for the Kraken, and Campbell has tasted victory in three straight for the Oilers.

What to watch for:

Campbell’s growing confidence. And Jones’ knack for finding ways to win.

Since Campbell switched equipment manufacturers, he’s gone 4-2-0 and allowed two or fewer goals against in five of those outings. Maybe it’s the pads. Maybe it’s confidence. But I think it’s also a renewed emphasis on technique. Edmonton used Campbell sparingly for several weeks, and it’s clear he went to work on his game. Campbell still struggles to rotate efficiently. But he’s been more patient on his edges lately. And I think he’s been much more effective at finding pucks through traffic.

Don’t look now but Jones has been arguably the hottest goalie in the NHL since the new year. He’s gone 7-0-0 and now sports a record of 21-5-3 on the season. Is it time Jones started getting love for the Vezina Trophy? Given his .895 save percentage, probably not. But there’s no denying that the Kraken goaltender has been exactly what the team needed after a disastrous inaugural season in the crease.

What fantasy owners should do:

I’m nervous about Campbell tonight. Despite several quality outings in a row, the Kraken are hot. They can score. And Campbell might be due for a tough outing. Jones I feel similarly about. With Evander Kane drawing back into the Oilers lineup, Seattle might have their hands full. Proceed with caution for both goaltenders.

Bottom line for Martin Jones:

Less is more against the Oilers.

Bottom line for Jack Campbell:

Stay patient and don’t overcommit.
