McKenna’s Matchup of the Day: Mar. 2 – Ville Husso vs. Igor Shesterkin

Former NHL netminder Mike McKenna provides his Daily Faceoff Starting Goalie Matchup of the Day for Tue. Mar. 2, 2022:
Why I like this matchup:
Igor Shesterkin and Ville Husso are 1-2 in save percentage at .941 and .935, respectively. They’ve been two of the best goaltenders in the NHL this season.
What to watch for:
Technicality and patience. Shesterkin might be the premier goalie skater in hockey. His movements are efficient and precise, which allow him to get his feet set early. That in turn makes tracking the puck easier. In Shesterkin’s past 15 starts, he hasn’t allowed more than three goals against. That level of consistency is why his name is now in the Hart Trophy conversation for league MVP.
After a tough rookie season, Husso has responded this year. The 27-year old from Helsinki has earned the net in St. Louis, even displacing Stanley Cup-winning goaltender Jordan Binnington for extended periods. Like Shesterkin, Husso has been dominant. In 19 starts, he’s only allowed more than three goals against once. Husso’s 13-3-0-2 record is a big reason why the Blues are currently second in the Central division.
What fantasy owners should do:
Both netminders have been dynamite for fantasy owners this season. There should be no hesitation in starting either of them.
Bottom line for Husso:
Husso is battling for the starting job in St. Louis. A win against Vezina Trophy favorite Shesterkin would be a major statement.
Bottom line for Igor Shesterkin:
The Blues are one of the league’s best in the third period. Shesterkin needs to lock it down in the final frame.
