McKenna’s Matchup of the Day: Mar. 24 – Thatcher Demko vs. Cam Talbot

Former NHL netminder Mike McKenna provides his Daily Faceoff Starting Goalie Matchup of the Day for Thu. Mar. 24, 2022:

Why I like this matchup:

Stanley Cup Playoff implications. Thatcher Demko has been a rock in net for the Vancouver Canucks all season. His team sits three points out of a wildcard spot. Cam Talbot has won six straight games for the Minnesota Wild, who are in a tight Central Division race with the St. Louis Blues and Nashville Predators.

What to watch for:

Demko is a technically proficient goaltender who prefers to stay within his posts. His movements are crisp and his skating routes well defined. For such a structured goaltender, Demko has strong game feel. He’s not a robot. Demko can break out a two-pad stack or windmill glove save when called upon. Despite only allowing 13 goals against in his last five starts, Demko posted a record of 1-3-1.

The crease in Minnesota changed drastically on Monday when the Wild acquired Marc-Andre Fleury from the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for a conditional second-round draft pick. Talbot responded by posting a 28-save shutout that night against the Vegas Golden Knights. He has a .910 save percentage this season, which is just slightly off his career mark of .915. Talbot played in this year’s NHL All-Star game, but he’s been streaky. With the addition of Fleury, Minnesota might have the best tandem in the NHL.

What fantasy owners should do:

I like both goalies in this game for fantasy owners. Talbot hasn’t seen many shots lately but he’s been piling up wins. And Vancouver may be improved under head coach Bruce Boudreau, but they’re not a high-threat team. Demko might not be favored to win in tonight’s game, but he’s been a consistent fantasy performer in all other categories.

Bottom line for Thatcher Demko:

Be aware at all times. Players like Kirill Kaprizov are dangerous from all over the ice. And Kevin Fiala has deceptive speed. Demko needs to know where the threats are before they materialize.

Bottom line for Cam Talbot:

I think playing against Vancouver is all about staying square and keeping your hands alive. Players like Boeser and Petterson love to bring the high heat. Talbot will need his feet set early in order to be reactive.
