Former NHL netminder Mike McKenna provides his Daily Faceoff Starting Goalie Matchup of the Day for Tue. Mar. 3, 2022:

Why I like this matchup:

Jarry is having a career year, while Vasilveskiy is considered the gold standard of modern goaltending. The Penguins and Lightning could easily end up facing off in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

What to watch for:

While Jarry hit a rough patch in late February, he got back on track in his last start. The 26-year old Pittsburgh netminder posted a 27-save shutout against the Rangers on Feb. 26. At this season’s midpoint, I felt Jarry deserved consideration for the Vezina trophy. He carried the Penguins while Sidney Crosby and other key members of the team were injured. Jarry’s choice of depth and post-integrations have improved under Pittsburgh goalie coach Andy Chiodo.

There is no slowing down Vasilevskiy. While his .921 save percentage may not be eye-popping, it’s still at the pointy end of the NHL goalie rankings. As good as the Lightning are, they do give up a fair number of grade-A chances, which Vasilevskiy makes up for. His advanced metrics are as stout as his traditional. Vasilevskiy is strong positionally, but his mental game is what makes him special. He’s the best money goalie in hockey.

What fantasy owners should do:

Always start Vasilevskiy. Jarry is similar this season, but there is reason for concern against the Lightning. Tampa has scored 23 goals in its last five games. However, I would still start Jarry unless your team has a goaltender available facing easier competition tonight.

Bottom line for Tristan Jarry:

Prove he can get it done in big games by outduelling Vasilevskiy, the NHL’s premier Stanley Cup Playoff closer.

Bottom line for Andrei Vasilevskiy:

Stay relaxed and let the play come to him. Over-aggressiveness can bite a goalie against the Penguins.
