McKenna’s Matchup of the Day: Nov. 9 – Casey DeSmith vs. Darcy Kuemper

Former NHL netminder Mike McKenna provides his Daily Faceoff Starting Goalie Matchup of the Day for Wed. Nov. 9, 2022:
Why I like this matchup:
Pittsburgh is currently seventh in the Metropolitan Division. Washington is sixth. Both teams are on the outside of the Stanley Cup playoff picture. And what makes this really interesting is that DeSmith has been tipped to start this game rather than Tristan Jarry. Both teams are in need of wins.
What to watch for:
Can DeSmith stop the bleeding for the Penguins? He’s allowed 3.25 goals against per game. Pittsburgh needs a boost and maybe that comes from its No. 2 goaltender. Considering the team only won two of its past 10 games, I’d say DeSmith has a chance to grab the crease if he can string together some wins. His career .915 save percentage shows that he can play. But can he own an NHL crease? The time is now if the 31-year old wants to be a No. 1 goaltender.
After a bit of a rocky start, Kuemper has played consistently well for the Capitals. In his past seven starts, the reigning Stanley Cup champion goaltender hasn’t allowed more than three goals. But he’s only won twice during that span. The Capitals simply aren’t scoring enough. Kuemper is at his best when he’s smart positionally and plays between the goal posts. At 6-foot-5, 215 pounds, he covers a lot of net.
What fantasy owners should do:
I’d play Kuemper and leave DeSmith on the bench. Despite the Penguins being rested – they haven’t played in three days – I have a bad feeling about this one. Kuemper has been a rock for the Capitals even if the wins haven’t been there. Barring that category, he’s been a quality pickup for fantasy owners.
Bottom line for Casey DeSmith:
He needs to get his feet set early, especially against Capitals winger Alex Ovechkin.
Bottom line for Darcy Kuemper:
It’s been three games since Kuemper has picked up a victory. He needs to stick to his structure and avoid chasing the game.
