McKenna’s Matchup of the Day: Oct. 22 – Tristan Jarry vs. Elvis Merzlikins

Former NHL netminder Mike McKenna provides his Daily Faceoff Starting Goalie Matchup of the Day for Sat. Oct. 22, 2022:
Why I like this matchup:
Jarry has once again been phenomenal to start the season. The Penguins netminder is 3-0 and, according to moneypuck.com, currently sits fifth in goals saved above expected.
After being on the injured reserve in the early going, Merzlikins has won two games in a row for the Blue Jackets. He’s allowed 11 goals in three outings but has found ways to win.
What to watch for:
Jarry’s game took a big step last season under Penguins goalie coach Andy Chiodo. His depth was more consistent, which I think led to better puck tracking. Jarry carried the Penguins early last year – and he’s doing it again this season. The question is if he can maintain it through the entire season. Jarry’s puckhandling is also top-notch. He’s able to jumpstart the Penguins breakout single-handedly.
Merzlikins’ performance has been up and down throughout his career, but when he’s on, he’s a fiery competitor that can steal games. Unfortunately for him, the Blue Jackets are still finding their way defensively. So far this season he’s struggled with rebound control and his aggressive depth on rush chances hasn’t fared well. But Merzlikins is still able to use his natural athleticism to bail himself out on occasion.
What fantasy owners should do:
I think Jarry is one of the top fantasy goaltenders out there. Start him every game. But Merzlikins makes me nervous, mostly due to the team in front of him. I’d leave him on the bench tonight against Pittsburgh. Against lesser teams, Merzlikins isn’t a bad option.
Bottom line for Tristan Jarry:
Columbus has some sneaky-skilled forwards not named Johnny Gaudreau. Stay focused.
Bottom line for Elvis Merzlikins:
Situational awareness is so important against Sidney Crosby and the Penguins. Merzlikins will need to make smart reads.
