Former NHL netminder Mike McKenna provides his Daily Faceoff Starting Goalie Matchup of the Day for Mon. Oct. 24, 2022:

Why I like this matchup:

After a down season, I think Hellebuyck has something to prove during the 2022-23 campaign, and he’s been strong thus far. At the other end, Greiss is making his first start as a member of the St. Louis Blues.

What to watch for:

Steadiness from Hellebuyck, and reliability from Greiss. There’s very little flash to Hellebuyck’s game, and that’s just the way he wants it. Being in position early is everything for the 6’4” netminder from Michigan. Hellebuyck isn’t the best skater, but his relatively modest depth makes up for it. He likes to stay close to home in the blue paint and minimize the distance needed to be covered on passing plays.

At 36 years of age, Greiss is playing for his sixth NHL franchise. With a career save percentage of .912, Greiss has always been able to provide quality starts. But he has never truly grasped a No.1 job in the NHL. He’s a strong skater with good reflexes. But Greiss tends to chase the play when the puck moves laterally in tight. He may not be the strongest technical goaltender, but Greiss makes up for it with experience and smart reads.

What fantasy owners should do:

Start Hellebuyck. He chews minutes and shots against. And with the St. Louis Blues already 3-0 on the season and playing strong, I would also start Greiss.

Bottom line for Thomas Greiss:

Be one save better than Hellebuyck.

Bottom line for Connor Hellebuyck:

St. Louis is faster than ever, especially on the rush. Be ready for net drives and second-wave attackers.
