Mikhail Grigorenko is returning to the KHL

Mikhail Grigorenko’s return to the NHL is over after just one season.

The former No. 12 overall draft pick has inked a three-year deal with CSKA Moscow.

Grigorenko was originally drafted by the Buffalo Sabres in 2012. After three years with the organization, he was part of the multi-player deal that sent Ryan O’Reilly from Colorado to Buffalo. He would play two seasons with the Avalanche before leaving the NHL to play in Russia.

A couple of strong KHL seasons coupled with a solid showing at the 2018 Olympics earned Grigorenko another shot in the NHL. He signed a one-year, show-me deal with the Columbus Blue Jackets last summer worth $1,200,000.

But, yet again, Grigorenko couldn’t hack in the big leagues. He scored just four goals and 12 points with the Blue Jackets over 32 games and found himself a healthy scratch on multiple occasions.

Given his age and his contract in the KHL, it’s unlikely we see Grigorenko in the NHL again.
