Minnesota Wild acquire Oskar Sundqvist from Detroit Red Wings for a 2023 fourth-round pick

As The Atheltic’s Shayna Goldman reported first; the Minnesota Wild have acquired forward Oskar Sundqvist from the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for a 2023 fourth-round pick.

The 28-year-old centre has 21 points (seven goals; 14 assists) in 52 games this season. According to our friends at CapFriendly, Sundqvist is in the final year of a four-year $11 million deal he signed with the St. Louis Blues in 2019. The contract was signed following an arbitration filing, he has a cap hit of $2.75 million AAV.

The Swedish forward was drafted in the third round, 81st overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2012 NHL Draft. Standing 6-foot-3, he is a hulking forward who can provide a bit of a flair to the bottom six.  During his rookie campaign in the 2015-16 season, he won the Stanley Cup with the Pens’ and again would hoist the Stanley Cup three years later with the St. Louis Blues in 2018-19. During that season, Sundqvist registered 31 points (14 goals, 17 assists) in 74 games while adding nine points in 25 playoff contests. Throughout an eight-year career, he has appeared in 340 games tallying 47 goals and 69 assists for 116 points while playing for the Penguins, Blues and Red Wings.

The Wild also dealt Jordan Greenway to the Buffalo Sabres for a draft pick to clear up some cap space prior to making this trade. General manager Bill Guerin has been shopping a bit, adding Marcus Johansson and Gustav Nyquist earlier this week in separate deals. The Wild currently sit second in the Central Division with a record of 35-21-6 and a points percentage of .613%.
