Wild sign GM Bill Guerin to multi-year extension
The Minnesota Wild have agreed to terms on a multi-year contract extension with general manager Bill Guerin, ESPN’s Emily Kaplan reported Tuesday afternoon.
Guerin, 55, has served in his current capacity with the Wild since 2019. Under his guidance, the Wild have reached the Stanley Cup Playoffs in six out of seven seasons; in 2026, Minnesota advanced to the second round of the playoffs, where they fell to the Colorado Avalanche in five games.
The Wild finished third in the NHL’s Central Division in the 2025-26 season with a 46-24-12 record and 104 points in 82 games. They were one of the league’s most newsworthy teams along the way, signing star winger Kirill Kaprizov to a record-breaking eight-year, $136 million contract last September before acquiring star defenseman Quinn Hughes from the Vancouver Canucks in December.
Guerin replaced Paul Fenton as Minnesota’s general manager following the 2018-19 season. He had spent the previous eight seasons working in various capacities with the Pittsburgh Penguins, with whom he finished his playing career in 2010. Guerin won the Stanley Cup in 2016 and 2017 as an assistant general manager in Pittsburgh.
A 6’2″, 220-pound winger during his playing days, Guerin appeared in 1,263 career games over parts of 18 seasons with the New Jersey Devils, Edmonton Oilers, Boston Bruins, Dallas Stars, St. Louis Blues, San Jose Sharks, New York Islanders, and the Penguins, collecting 429 goals, 856 points, and 1,660 penalty minutes. He also racked up 73 points in 133 career playoff games, winning the Stanley Cup as a member of the 1995 Devils and 2009 Penguins.
With Guerin now retained for multiple seasons beyond 2026-27, the Wild have addressed most of their pressing offseason business. Over the past few months, they’ve also extended head coach John Hynes, traded for veterans Blake Coleman and Olli Maatta, re-upped Michael McCarron and Bobby Brink, and signed free agent winger Maxim Shabanov. However, the biggest item on Guerin’s to-do list remains unresolved: Hughes, the 2024 Norris Trophy winner, is currently slated to enter the final year of his current contract with no extension in sight.
