The Minnesota Wild will be without their top center for an indertiminate amount of time, as Marco Rossi will be out for “a little bit” with a lower-body-injury, per The Athletic’s Michael Russo.

Rossi missed Minnesota’s game on October 20th against the New York Rangers with a lower-body-injury after blocking a shot the game before against the Philadelphia Flyers. According to Russo, this current injury is related to that previous one.

In 17 games played this season, Rossi has four goals and nine assists for 13 points. The Feldkirch, Austria native’s missed game this season was the first since the 2022-23 season, as he’s played all 82 regular-season games each of the last two years. Last season, he put up 24 goals and 36 assists for 60 points. The year prior, he notched 21 goals and 19 assists for points.

Rossi, 24, was selected ninth overall by the Wild in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft after two seasons with the OHL’s Ottawa 67’s. In his last season with the 67’s, Rossi scored 39 goals and added 81 assists for a remarkable 120 points in 56 games, which led him to be awarded the Red Tilson Trophy as the OHL’s MVP.

After getting drafted, Rossi missed almost all of the 2020-21 season with long-term complications from COVID-19. He then spent the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons splitting time between Minnesota and the AHL’s Iowa Wild, before becoming a full-time NHLer for the 2023-24 season.

As Russo mentioned, Rossi’s absence could be an opportunity for center Danila Yurov to play higher in the lineup. Yurov was the Wild’s first-round draft pick in 2022, and is in his first season in the NHL after coming over from Magnitogorsk Metallurg in the KHL.

Minnesota will play the third of a five-game homestand when host the Anaheim Ducks on Saturday.
