Report: Wild sign McCarron to six-year contract extension

Minnesota Wild general manager Bill Guerin has been hard at work making sure his team’s roster stays where it needs to be to carry on as a Stanley Cup contender, and he got one more box marked off his offseason checklist on Tuesday.
The Wild has officially announced the signing of veteran forward Michael McCarron to a six-year contract extension with an average annual value of $3.3 million.

Guerin made an aggressive move to add McCarron to Minnesota’s forward group, shipping a 2028 second-round draft pick to the Nashville Predators in exchange for the fourth-liner and penalty kill specialist.
Standing at six-foot-six, McCarron added plenty of size and physicality to the Wild’s lineup, and he managed to chip in offensively, too. After the trade, the Michigan native chipped in three goals and two assists for five points in 20 regular season games to help the club qualify for the postseason.
He followed that up with a strong effort in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, scoring twice and dishing out a pair of assists for four points in 11 games. The Wild knocked off the Dallas Stars in the first round of the postseason before bowing out in the second round with a five-game series loss at the hands of the Colorado Avalanche.
The former Predator and Montreal Canadiens winger has 36 goals and 43 assists for 79 points in 381 appearances. McCarron was set to be an intriguing asset in an unrestricted free agency market that is running short on impactful, established players.
With McCarron’s deal factored in, the Wild have about $9.4 million in space under next season’s salary cap, according to PuckPedia. Guerin’s top priority this summer will be working on an extension for star defenseman Quinn Hughes, who will become eligible to extend his tenure in St. Paul on July 1.
