Mitch Marner is back on the shelf.

After missing nearly the entire month of December with a shoulder injury, Marner has been placed on COVID-19 protocol.

After shutting down early due to multiple COVID-19 positives, the Leafs finally found themselves close to full strength coming out of the Christmas break. They’ll now be without Marner and Pierre Engvall until they can produce two negative COVID tests more than 24 hours apart.

The Leafs own a 22-8-2 record but sit third in the incredibly competitive Atlantic Division. They’ve come out of the break with wins over the Ottawa Senators and Edmonton Oilers and they’ll now embark on a six-game trip that starts in Colorado with a game against the Avalanche.

Through 21 games this season, Marner has six goals and 21 points. Alex Kerfoot will slide into Marner’s spot on the Leafs’ top line with Auston Matthews.
