The Los Angeles Kings and Montreal Canadiens have made a minor league swap, with the Kings sending defenseman Frederic Allard to the Los Angeles Kings for center Nate Schnarr.

There likely aren’t any NHL implications with this deal, outside of the off chance that Frederic Allard gets some minutes on the Habs blueline down the stretch if they sell off some pieces and deal with some injuries. The Habs bringing in a French player is always a big story, but outside of that, it more or less just helps out their AHL teams.

Allard does come with more NHL experience than Schnarr, having played one game for the Nashville Predators in 2020-21, where he had no points. Allard got into 35 games this season in the AHL with the Ontario Reign, with two goals, five assists, and seven points.

Allard was a third round pick for the Preds in 2016, and was in the organization until last year’s trade deadline when he was dealt to the Kings for Brayden Burke. He’s currently on a one-year, $750,000 contract, and will be a restricted free agent at the end of the season.

Schnarr has yet to play in the NHL in his career, but played 27 games in the AHL with the Laval Rocket this season, scoring three goals, four assists, and seven points on the year.

Schnarr was a third round pick for the Arizona Coyotes in 2017, and has now been traded three times, previously being moved as part of the package to the New Jersey Devils in exchange for Taylor Hall in 2019, and then again to the Habs in exchange for Andrew Hammond at last year’s deadline. Schnarr is also on a one-year, $750,000 contract, and will be a restricted free agent at the end of the season.
