Canadiens might have something in prospect Vinzenz Rohrer

One of the rising players in the Montreal Canadiens system is starting to make a name for himself on the international stage.

At the 2025 IIHF Men’s World Championship, Austria has turned a lot of heads by advancing to the knockout stage for the first time since 1994. One of the key players during the team’s performance in Stockholm so far has been the play of Vinzenz Rohrer. The 20-year-old potted four goals and six points in the first seven games of the tournament, sitting fourth on the team in scoring.

Rohrer was taken by the Montreal Canadiens in the third round, 75th overall, of the 2022 NHL Draft. While he might not be widely known to the North American fan, even though he played two years in the Ontario Hockey League with the Ottawa 67’s. However, with how he has played on the international level as well as his progression with the ZSC Lions of the National League in Switzerland, Rohrer is quietly becoming an exceptional prospect.

On Wednesday’s edition of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Steven Ellis joined Colby Cohen and Tyler Yaremchuk to explain why Rohrer is someone to keep an eye on.

Steven Ellis: Austria has a ton of fun to watch this year. If you had a chance to watch them, this is the first time in my lifetime that they’ve actually qualified for the playoff round, but they look good. They beat good teams. When you look at Vinzez Rohrer, that’s the guy I’m looking at here. He had a very good season in the National League. Then, you go and watch him at this tournament. This has been a breakout of the tournament for him. He’s very fast. He’s got four goals, six points. He’s blocking shots. He’s playing on the penalty kill. He’s doing everything for this Austrian team.

We’ve seen him play at the men’s national team level before. Last year, he was more of a depth guy. Even this year in the Olympic qualifiers, didn’t see much out of him. This has been his breakout tournament, and he is showing signs that he can be a very valuable bottom-six player for the Canadiens, just due to how well he moves, that energy, and everything there combined.
