Canadiens’ Mike Matheson out day-to-day, won’t play Tuesday vs. Flyers

The Montreal Canadiens have listed defenseman Mike Matheson as day-to-day with an undisclosed injury, the club announced Tuesday morning.
Matheson, 31, has four goals and 16 points while averaging 24:54 of ice time in 32 games with the Canadiens this season. The Pointe-Claire, Quebec product skated in 26:05 of Montreal’s 4-1 win over the Edmonton Oilers on Sunday.
The Canadiens will go without their veteran rearguard and alternate captain on Tuesday evening as they play host to the Philadelphia Flyers at the Bell Centre in Montreal.

Matheson is less than a month removed from agreeing to terms with the Canadiens on a new five-year, $6-million AAV contract extension that will keep him in his home province through the 2030-31 season. The 6’2″ left-handed defender is in his fourth season with the Canadiens since being acquired from the Pittsburgh Penguins in July 2022.
A first-round pick (No. 23 overall) of the Florida Panthers in the 2012 NHL Draft, Matheson spent his first three post-draft seasons at Boston College before turning pro in the Panthers organization in 2015. He spent parts of five seasons with the Panthers to begin his NHL career, signing an eight-year, $4.875-million AAV contract with the club in 2017.
Following the COVID-shortened 2019-20 season, the Panthers traded Matheson and Colton Sceviour to the Penguins in exchange for Patric Hornqvist. Matheson enjoyed two solid seasons in Pittsburgh before traded again, this time to Montreal, alongside a fourth-round pick in exchange for Jeff Petry and Ryan Poehling.
Matheson’s game quickly reached new heights in Montreal, as he scored 34 points in just 48 games with the club in the 2020-21 season and jumped to 62 points in 82 games the following year. His output has declined somewhat in the years since, but he remains a trusted member of the Canadiens’ top four on the blue line.
Through 659 career games over parts of 11 NHL seasons with the Panthers, Penguins, and Canadiens, Matheson has collected 78 goals and 281 points. He’s added a goal and eight points in 25 career playoff contests.
