On Tuesday, the PWHL Player Safety Committee announced that Montreal Victoire forward Abby Roque has been suspended one game for an illegal check to the head on Vancouver Goldeneyes forward Abby Boreen.

The incident happened during Sunday’s Takeover Tour game in Quebec City. Early in the third period, Boreen was trying to receive a pass from Michelle Karvinen, when she was caught with a high hit by Roque, who looked equally looking to throw a hit as much as trying to intercept the pass.

Boreen ended up spiraling toward the ice, where she laid for a little bit before leaving for the locker room. After a very lengthy video review, Roque was handed a match penalty. Boreen was able to return to the ice before the review was completed.

The PSC noted that Roque’s contact to the head was avoidable, hence the penalty and the suspension. This is the first time the 28-year-old has faced supplemental discipline in her PWHL career.

The Goldeneyes failed to capitalize on the five-minute power play, with the Victoire managing to hang on for a 1-0 win.

Roque will be forced to sit out Tuesday night’s game against the Ottawa Charge. She’ll be eligible to return to the lineup on Sunday, when Montreal takes on the New York Sirens in another Takeover game in Washington, D.C.

The Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. native, has been a welcome addition to the Montreal roster this season, bringing a little bit of an edge and scoring touch that the team has needed. She’s fit in very well on the top line alongside Laura Stacey and captain Marie-Philip Poulin. In 10 games, Roque has scored four goals and six assists for 10 points, sitting second on the team in scoring behind Poulin, and is tied for sixth in points among PWHLers.

The Victoire (4-2-0-4) sit fifth in the PWHL, one point back of the Charge for fourth.
