The PWHL announced Thursday that Montreal Victoire forward Marie-Philip Poulin has been fined $250 after receiving a major penalty for charging against the New York Sirens last Sunday.

The incident occurred midway through the third period, when Poulin hit Sirens’ forward Jade Downie-Landry. Poulin received a five-minute major but did not receive a game misconduct.

“During the game, the play was reviewed by the on-ice officials, in consultation with the PWHL Central Situation Room, and it was determined there would be no game misconduct imposed since the infraction did not result in an injury to the face or head of her opponent,” the league said in a statement. “This is the first major penalty and the first fine that Poulin has been assessed in her PWHL career.”

Poulin scored twice in that game, leading the Victoire to a 2-1 win. The Montreal captain now has a league-leading 10 goals this season, as well as two assists for 12 points in 14 games. Last season, Poulin had 10 goals and 13 assists for 23 points in 21 games, as well as a goal and assist in three playoff contests.

Forward Abby Boreen and Jennifer Gardiner aren’t far behind, tied for second in team scoring with 10 points each. Defender Erin Ambrose leads the team in assists with nine, and finds herself among the highest-scoring blueliners in the league.

The Victoire are now 8-3-1-2 with 31 points, first place in the PWHL and five points clear of the second-place Minnesota Frost. The league is currently experiencing an international break, and the action continues Feb. 11 when the Toronto Sceptres host the Frost.
