With an assist on Martin Necas’ first-period goal on Tuesday night against the Los Angeles Kings, Nathan MacKinnon has set a record for most points in Colorado Avalanche team history with his 1,016th point, passing Joe Sakic’s total in Denver.

The record only applies to the team’s days in Colorado, and not the all-time franchise record. Sakic holds that honor with 1,641 after spending the first seven years while the team was still based in Quebec.

The assist came just 48 seconds into the second period, with Necas firing a snap shot past Kings goaltender Darcy Kuemper. Sam Malinski would make it 2-0 seven minutes into the frame in an otherwise quiet shooting night for both teams.

MacKinnon is coming off an excellent season that saw him become the first player to register 100 points. He also surpassed the 1,000 point threshold with his 101st point of the season, becoming the 10th active NHLer to reach the mark. MacKinnon has spent his entire NHL career with the Avs since going first overall in 2013. Most notably, he helped the Avalanche win the Stanley Cup in 2022, and won gold at the 2025 4 Nations Face-Off after leading the tournament with four goals.

MacKinnon owns a couple of Avalanche records, including the single-season scoring title with 89 assists and 140 points in 2023-24. MacKinnon won the Hart Trophy and Ted Lindsay Award for his play that season. In 871 career games, MacKinnon’s point totals are made up of 367 goals and 649 assists. He also has 69 career game-winning goals.

The Avalanche will have little time to rest as they’ll host the Utah Mammoth on Wednesday evening. They’ll stay at home to take on Dallas on Oct. 11 before heading to New York State to take on the Buffalo Sabres on Oct. 13.
