The New Jersey Devils announced on Thursday that they have acquired center Amadeus Lombardi in a trade with the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for their fourth-round pick in this weekend’s 2026 NHL Draft.

Lombardi, who was himself a fourth-round pick in the 2022 NHL Draft by the Red Wings, has excelled with Detroit’s AHL affiliate Grand Rapids Griffins in each of the past two seasons.

The 23-year-old from Newmarket, Ontario racked up 42 points on 16 goals and 26 assists in 47 games this season as the Griffins put together a strong campaign and made the Calder Cup Playoffs.

The year prior, he had 19 goals and 21 assists for 40 points in 44 contests, which followed up a 26-point in 70-game effort in his first full season after turning pro in 2023-24.

Lombardi is a restricted free agent who will need a new contract from new general manager Sunny Mehta, but for New Jersey, Lombardi will provide a high-level AHL scoring option for their AHL affiliate Utica Comets, or he could provide a depth option down the middle for the Devils.

For Detroit, the move adds a draft pick to their stockpile for the weekend in exchange for a player Steve Yzerman was clearly willing to part with.

The Wings don’t have their own first-round pick on Friday night after sending it to the St. Louis Blues for Justin Faulk at the trade deadline, but following this trade, they now have one pick apiece in rounds two through six with an extra pick in the seventh and final round of the draft.

Yzerman is navigating a challenging offseason, as captain and first-line center Dylan Larkin requested a trade earlier this month, and provided a short list of teams he will be willing to waive his trade protection for.
