How will Sunny Mehta approach his first offseason with the Devils?

The New Jersey Devils are in a new era of the franchise. Gone is Tom Fitzgerald, who ran the team since 2019-20, and in is Sunny Mehta to take the Devils in a new direction. He was a forward-thinking assistant general manager with the Florida Panthers, will he provide the same mindset at the helm of New Jersey?
Jeff Marek joined Tyler Yaremchuk and Carter Hutton on Daily Faceoff Live to talk about how bold Mehta will be this summer.
Jeff Marek: So Sunny Mehta comes in, new general manager. What does he want to do, a wait-and-see approach, or does he want to roll up his sleeves? I’m of the mind that he’s a roll-up-the-sleeves kind of guy.
They would need a second buyout window to do this, but do they buy out Jacob Markstrom? You would need a second window to do it. It’s not simple. I know it’s a big ticket.
Carter Hutton: Does someone value him though? Could you move him? No, you don’t think so? What about like San Jose? We talk about Bobrovsky going there. Maybe he goes there and he softens the blow with the younger guy, or he becomes a buyout.
Jeff Marek: That’s the guy that I keep coming back to on New Jersey with Sonny Mehta here, because he’s gonna be creative. Sonny’s a really smart guy, and I’m sure he has a book and an idea o, if whether it’s the New Jersey Devils or any other team that he might have gone to to take over, I’m sure he has “these are the ideas I would have if I was running this team”.
That’s why I don’t take anything off the table. Any sort of traditional thinking about, “Wow, this is too much money, his salary hasn’t kicked in, we need a second buyout window”, I think for a guy like him, as creative as he is, and again, new school general manager, I think everything’s on the table. I really, really do. That’s why I wonder about Markstrom.
