A veteran backstop is staying in the Garden State for a long time.

According to multiple reports, the New Jersey Devils have re-signed goaltender Jake Allen to a five-year contract. The deal will carry an AAV of $1.8 million through the 2029-30 season.

Allen just came to the end of his two-year contract extension, which he originally signed with the Montreal Canadiens in October 2022. The New Brunswick native had a cap hit of $1.925 million, but the AAV was up to $3.85 million. He came over to New Jersey via trade with the Canadiens prior to the 2024 NHL Trade Deadline.

In his time with the Devils, Allen has proven to be a solid backup, especially since Jacob Markstrom came into the fold this past season. While Markstrom has taken the brunt of the games, Allen has been a solid supporting character when called upon.

This past season, the 34-year-old posted a 13-16-1 record in 31 appearances, registering a 2.66 goals-against average and a .908 save percentage while finishing tied for seventh in the NHL, alongside Markstrom, in shutouts with four. The duo helped the Devils get back to the Stanley Cup Playoffs, ultimately losing to the Carolina Hurricanes in the first round.

Allen’s numbers improved from the 2023-24 season, where his GAA and SV% were mediocre, playing behind subpar teams in Montreal and New Jersey.

Across 12 NHL seasons, Allen has appeared in 460 games, notching a record of 208-184-43, a 2.76 GAA, a .908 SV% with 28 shutouts. He also has a postseason record of 11-11-1, all of which came with the St. Louis Blues.

With Allen signing on for the foreseeable future, the Devils have their goaltending tandem locked up for one more season, as Markstrom has one more year remaining on his six-year contract, which he signed with the Calgary Flames in 2020.

According to PuckPedia, the Devils would have over $12.5 million in projected cap space next season.
