Devils sign Jacob Markstrom to two-year, $6 million AAV extension

The New Jersey Devils have agreed to terms on a two-year, $6 million AAV contract extension with veteran goaltender Jacob Markstrom, the club announced Friday evening.
Markstrom, 35, has a 2-2-0 record and an .830 save percentage through four games with the Devils to start the 2025-26 season. The Gavle, Sweden product is one of the NHL’s tallest goaltenders, standing in at 6’6″ and 207 pounds.
The Devils acquired Markstrom from the Calgary Flames during the 2024 off-season. Markstrom is currently in the final season of the six-year contract he signed with the Flames as a free agent in 2020; his current deal also carries a $6 million cap hit, with the Flames retaining $1.875 million this year and last.

Markstrom has missed part of the 2025-26 season thus far while sidelined with injury, allowing Jake Allen to take the reins more often than not. Allen, a fellow 35-year-old who is signed through 2030, has gone 5-1-0 with a .906 save percentage through seven appearances this season.
A second-round pick (No. 31 overall) of the Florida Panthers in the 2008 NHL Draft, Markstrom made sporadic appearances with the Cats before being included in a blockbuster trade with the Vancouver Canucks in 2014 that saw Roberto Luongo head back to Florida.
Markstrom firmly established himself as an NHL starting goaltender over parts of seven seasons with the Canucks, making 60 appearances in both the 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons and helping the team reach the playoffs in 2020.
After signing with the Flames prior to the 2020-21 season, Markstrom remained one of the league’s most trusted workhorses and recorded career highs with 63 games played, 37 wins, and nine shutouts during Calgary’s Pacific Division-winning 2021-22 campaign, after which he was named a Vezina Trophy finalist.
The Flames traded Markstrom to the Devils in 2024 in exchange for defenseman Kevin Bahl and a 2025 first-round pick, used to select Cole Reschny. Markstrom went 26-16-6 with four shutouts and a .900 save percentage with New Jersey in 2024-25, helping them reach the playoffs as the No. 7 seed in the Eastern Conference.
Through 538 career games over parts of 16 NHL seasons with the Panthers, Canucks, Flames, and Devils, Markstrom has put together a 243-214-63 record with 24 shutouts and a .908 save percentage. He’s gone 14-17 with a .911 save percentage in 31 playoff contests with Vancouver, Calgary, and New Jersey.
