New Jersey Devils sign Martin Brodeur as executive VP of hockey ops

The New Jersey Devils announced Thursday that Hall of Fame netminder Martin Brodeur has agreed to a multi-year contract extension to remain with the organization as an executive vice president of hockey operations.

Brodeur was previously brought in by general manager Tom Fitzgerald to be a senior advisor and executive vice president in 2020. Brodeur, who was juggling business outside of hockey, will now solely focus on the hockey operations side full time. A couple of his duties will include player recruitment and overseeing the Devils’ goaltending developmental department.

Fitzgerald spoke highly of Brodeur in a recent statement. “Marty has been a tremendous resource to me with his experience, input, foresight, and relationships throughout the hockey world,” Fitzgerald said. “It makes sense to formalize and give clarity to his roles and responsibilities within the organization. I am excited that he has committed to staying with us, as we all work to continue to return New Jersey to the levels of success that Marty reached here as a player.”

Brodeur’s legendary career of course started with the Devils organization back in 1991-92 when he played four games with the Devils after a successful major junior campaign with the now-defunct, Saint-Hyacinthe Laser of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL). Brodeur won the Calder Trophy in 1993-94 as the NHL’s Rookie of the Year, beating out Jason Arnott and Mikael Renberg. Brodeur would go on to spend 21 seasons with the Devils, leading them to three Stanley Cup championships. He would spend his final season in 2014-15 with the St. Louis Blues before announcing his retirement. Brodeur is still the NHL’s All-Time leader in regular season wins (691), and shutouts (125). He was awarded the Vezina trophy four times throughout his career as the NHL’s best goaltender, and the Jennings Trophy five times for the lowest number of goals against league-wide.

Brodeur released this statement about why he chose to re-sign with the Devils organization. “Working with Tom’s group for the past few years, I have seen firsthand what he and our Managing Partners, David Blitzer and Josh Harris are building,” said Brodeur. “I’ve been fortunate to help them in that time, as we move in the right direction toward consistent, sustained success. This decision allows me to commit all my time to the hockey side and focus on achieving the ultimate goal for our players, tremendous fans and entire organization.”
