Islanders’ Hudson Fasching placed on injured reserve with upper-body injury

On Friday, the New York Islanders placed forward Hudson Fasching on injured reserve with an upper-body injury. The absence of the 29-year-old is nothing new, as the ailment has caused him to miss the last four games.
According to Islanders beat reporter Stefen Rosner, the placement of Fasching on IR will make some room in the lineup, potentially going to forward Marc Gatcomb, who was recently called up from the Islanders’ American Hockey League affiliate, the Bridgeport Islanders.
Hudson Fasching has been placed on IR.
That opens up the roster spot for Marc Gatcomb, who has been recalled.
Also, potentially a spot if Simon Holmstrom is ready to return.
We'll await the ruling on the Maxim Tsyplakov hearing. #Isles
Gatcomb has only played one game so far this season, making his NHL debut on Jan. 14 against the Detroit Red Wings. The 25-year-old didn’t score a point in 7:27 of ice time. In 35 games with Bridgeport this year, Gatcomb has scored nine goals and eight assists for 17 points.
Fasching has been out of the lineup since Jan. 5. It hasn’t been revealed exactly what has put Fasching on the shelf, but it is enough to keep the former Buffalo Sabre on the shelf for close to two weeks. If Fasching’s placement on IR is retroactive to his last game, he theoretically could return to the lineup whenever he’s cleared to play.
The Apple Valley, Minnesota native has yet to register a point in 19 games this season, missing a handful of games as a healthy scratch. He’s averaged 8:56 of ice time per game thus far, posting a plus/minus of -6.
The Islanders (17-20-7) are last in the Metropolitan Division, eight points back of the Boston Bruins for the last Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference.
