— New York Islanders (@NYIslanders) July 16, 2024Holmstrom’s estimated qualifying offer was $874,124. He recently finished the final year of his three-year, entry-level contract with an AAV of $863,333.
The Tranas, Sweden native was originally taken by the Islanders in the first round, 23rd overall, of the 2019 NHL Draft. Holmstrom came to North America during the 2019-20 season, joining the Isles’ American Hockey League affiliate, Bridgeport Tigers (who were later renamed the Islanders in 2021).
After getting a taste of the NHL during the 2022-23 campaign, Holmstrom had a real coming-out party this past season. In spending all of 2023-24 with New York, he scored a career-high 15 goals and 10 assists for 25 points across 75 games. He also played in three of the Islanders’ five games in the first round against the Carolina Hurricanes.
While those numbers aren’t over the moon, Holmstrom’s production during stretches in the team’s top six shows promise that he can be an efficient scorer in this league.
In 125 NHL games, the 23-year-old has notched 21 goals and 13 assists for 34 points. In 154 AHL appearances, Holmstrom has potted 27 goals and 43 assists, including four points in six games with Bridgeport during the 2022 Calder Cup Playoffs.
Prior to arriving in New York, Holmstrom established himself as a solid prospect in the Swedish Hockey League with HV71. With the team’s Under-20 program, Holmstrom won the J20 SuperElit championship in 2018. He has also represented his country on a number of occasions. Along with playing for the Under-16 and Under-17 national programs, Holmstrom won gold with Tre Kronor at the 2019 IIHF Men’s Under-18 World Championship. He also played for the Swedes at the 2021 IIHF World Junior Championship.
