Islanders sign forward Mitchell Chaffee to one-year contract

The New York Islanders are adding some experienced forward depth.
On Wednesday, the team announced that they have signed winger Mitchell Chaffee to a one-year contract.

According to PuckPedia, the deal will carry a cap hit of $850,000.
Chaffee, 28, played 11 games for the Tampa Bay Lightning last season, recording just one assist. He did, however, have a very strong season with the Lightning’s American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate Syracuse Crunch, where he put up 24 goals and 33 assists for 57 points in 54 games.
The Grand Rapids, Michigan native played collegiately for the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where he spent three seasons and served as the team’s co-captain as a sophomore. Over his last two years in college, Chaffee proved to be strong offensive contributor, scoring 34 goals and adding 37 assists for 71 points over 70 combined games.
Chaffee began his professional career in March of 2020 when he signed a two-year, entry-level contract with the Minnesota Wild as an undrafted free agent. He spent three seasons in Minnesota’s organization, playing almost exclusively for the AHL’s Iowa Wild, save for a two-game cup of coffee up with Minnesota in the 2021-22 season. His best campaign with Iowa came in that 2021-22 season, when he notched 23 goals and 16 assists for 39 points in 49 games.
In July of 2023, Chaffee signed with Tampa Bay as an unrestricted free agent. Over his first two years with the Lightning, he got his longest look in the NHL. In the 2023-24 season, he registered four goals and three assists for seven points in 30 games with Tampa Bay. In 2024-25, he put up 12 goals and six assists for 18 points in 66 NHL games.
