The New York Islanders and general manager Mathieu Darche have been one of the quieter teams in the NHL in what has been an incredibly busy week throughout the league, but that changed Friday.

According to a report form Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman, the Islanders have signed defenseman Tony DeAngelo to a two-year contract extension that carries a salary cap hit of $4.5 million.

DeAngelo was set to hit the unrestricted free agency market on July 1 without a new deal after his second season on Long Island. The New Jersey native joined the organization midway through the 2024-25 campaign after starting the season in the KHL.

A talented offensive presence on the back end, DeAngelo has logged considerable power play time, and he posted 35 points in 76 games this season on 5 goals and 30 assists. In his debut campaign with the Isles, he had 19 points in 35 games while logging a career-high 23:21 of time on ice per game.

The 30-year-old is with his fifth NHL team after breaking into the league with the Arizona Coyotes before being traded to the New York Rangers, where he spent four seasons.

DeAngelo has had two separate stints with the Carolina Hurricanes, and he spent the 2022-23 season with the Philadelphia Flyers.

Once the move becomes official, New York’s defense will be fairly set, as DeAngelo will join reigning Calder Trophy winner Matthew Schaefer, Scott Mayfield, Ryan Pulock, Adam Pelech, Alexander Romanov and Isaiah George as defensemen signed to NHL deals.

According to PuckPedia, Darche will still have about $6.1 million in space underneath the salary cap to make further moves this offseason, with 13 forwards under contract as well as goaltender Ilya Sorokin. Semyon Varlamov remains under contract, but he made just 10 appearances in the 2024-25 season and did not appear at all this past year. David Rittich is an unrestricted free agent.
