With the deadline for eligible restricted free agents to file for arbitration looming on Sunday, another notable player has joined Dallas Stars winger Jason Robertson in reportedly filing to go to arbitration with his team.

According to a report from Sportsnet NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, New York Rangers defenseman Braden Schneider has filed for arbitration, setting the table for a new contract and making him ineligible to be signed to an offer sheet.

Schneider, a 24-year-old right-handed defenseman, has been a mainstay on the Rangers blue line since making his NHL debut during the 2021-22 season.

One of the most durable players in the league, Schneider appeared in all 82 games during the 2025-26 season, a feat he also achieved in 2023-24. In the seasons immediately before and after that one, he played 81 and 80 regular season contests, respectively.

Schneider got the most responsibility of his young career this season, as he skated an average of 20:27 of time on ice per game, scoring two goals and dishing out 16 assists for 18 points.

While Schneider can no longer be signed to an offer sheet, he could still be traded to another team or sign an extension with New York prior to the arbitration. Schneider’s future with the club has been in question throughout the offseason, as his name has been in trade conversations, and the Rangers have added another top-four right-handed defenseman in Sean Durzi, acquired from the Utah Mammoth as part of the return for center Vincent Trocheck.

With Adam Fox firmly entrenched on the right side of New York’s top pairing, the availability of significant minutes to allow Schneider to continue to develop is in question.

The Saskatchewan native wrapped up a two-year contract that carried a salary cap hit of $2.2 million this past season.
