The New York Rangers were shutout at home – again – on Tuesday night, losing 2-0 to the Edmonton Oilers. After failing to score in the first two periods, the Rangers set an NHL record for the longest stretch to start a season without scoring a goal at home (not including the now-defunct Pittsburgh Pirates in 1928).

On Wednesday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Tyler Yaremchuk and former NHL goaltender Carter Hutton discuss New York’s struggles at Madison Square Garden, and whether it’s a blip on the radar or a sign of what’s to come in the 2025-26 regular season.

Tyler Yaremchuk: Early season slump or is this a concerning sign for the Rangers’ offense?

Carter Hutton: I think a bit of both, it’s a bit concerning when you’re starting at home. I thought game one was the most disappointing for me, as it felt like a lackluster effort. When I look at the game against the Capitals last Sunday, I thought Washington goaltender Charlie Lindgren was very good, but I thought the Rangers created a lot of chances from tough areas.

One positive for the Rangers is that they’re close, and they’re not giving up a ton of chances. But they have to break through here, you know? I don’t know if it’s a greasy goal, but they have to break the slump.

Tyler Yaremchuk: The reason I’m going to learn more towards it being an early season slump is that they have 10 goals in their two road games, their expected goals for, according to Natural Stat Trick, is above 2.7. They have double digits in high-danger shots. They’re doing enough, they’re generating chances, and all four lines got chances against Skinner on Tuesday.
