The New York Rangers got some bad news on Monday, as center J.T. Miller is being evaluated for a potential lower-body injury, according to Rangers head coach Mike Sullivan.

Miller sustained the injury during Rangers’ practice on Monday as they were running a power play drill. According to a video posted by Athletic reporter Vince Z. Mercogliano, Miller lunged for a puck, falling on his left leg in the process, and he looked to be in discomfort after making the play. He got up favoring the leg and went to the dressing room, skating awkwardly.

“Excuse me, I just found out it myself when I got off the ice,” said Sullivan, who had been working with a separate group at UBS in preparation for Monday’s preseason game against the New York Islanders. “All I can tell you is that he’s being evaluated right now.”

At this point in time, the severity of Miller’s injury and the timeline for his return is not known, but we will likely know more about the injury in the coming days after his evaluation. The Rangers will have to hope that it’s nothing long-term, something that’s become a trend this September, with the Los Angeles Kings‘ Corey Perry and the Florida Panthers‘ Aleksander Barkov also sustaining injuries in practice.

Miller, who is in his second stint with the Rangers after being traded in late January from the Vancouver Canucks amidst off-ice drama with Elias Pettersson, was named New York’s captain two weeks ago.

Miller had another solid season in 2024-25, finishing the year with 22 goals and 48 assists for 70 points in 72 games with the Canucks and Rangers. He was a bit behind that pace while dealing with off-ice issues in Vancouver, as he had nine goals and 35 points in 40 games there, but he produced the exact same point total after he was dealt to New York with 13 goals and 35 points, this time coming in 32 games.

The Rangers will continue their preseason action on Monday when they play the Islanders at 7 p.m. EST. The Rangers are currently 1-1-1 through three exhibition matches.
