The Rangers were among the very busiest teams in the NHL on Wednesday, the start of the new league year and the opening of unrestricted free agency.
In addition to adding Del Gaizo, Drury made several trades, sending Will Borgen to the Boston Bruins and acquiring goalie Joonas Korpisalo from them in separate deals and acquiring defenseman Marcus Pettersson from the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for a top-10 protected first-round pick in 2030.
At the draft, Drury swung a blockbuster deal to add talented winger Pavel Dorofeyev from the Vegas Golden Knights in exchange for a package comprised entirely of draft picks before signing him to a seven-year, $77 million contract to make him the new highest-paid skater on the team.
New York also added winger Oliver Bjorkstrand to a one-year contract worth $4.5 million in a bid to bolster its middle six forwards.
The Rangers are looking to improve their roster after two consecutive seasons of missing out on the Stanley Cup Playoffs following a Presidents’ Trophy win and run to the Eastern Conference Final in 2023-24.
