The PWHL Player Safety Committee announced Tuesday that New York Sirens’ defender Micah Zandee-Hart was fined $250 for a cross-check during Saturday’s game against the Ottawa Charge.

The incident occurred midway through the first period after Charge forward Gabbie Hughes delivered a big hit on Sirens’ defender Jaime Bourbonnais. Zandee-Hart responded by delivering a high cross-check on Hughes, which led to a scrum between the two teams.

“In their review, the PWHL Player Safety Committee determined that Zandee-Hart used her stick in a dangerous manner in retaliation to forcefully cross-check Ottawa’s Gabbie Hughes in the neck and head, violating Rule 60.1 – Cross-Checking,” the PWHL said in a press release. “Players must be in control of their sticks at all times and bear the responsibility not to use it dangerously.”

This is both the first major penalty and fine of Zandee-Hart’s career.

New York signed Zandee-Hart to a one-year contract extension earlier this month, keeping her with the club through the 2026-27 season. The 28-year-old is in the final year of a three-year contract signed ahead of the 2023-24 season.

The Saanichton, B.C., native has played in 49 career games with the Sirens, recording one goal and 12 assists for 13 points. Her 10 points in 2024-25 was tied for 10th among PWHL defenders.

The Sirens defeated the Charge 4-0, with forward Taylor Girard scoring a hat trick and goaltender Kayle Osborne stopping 28 shots to earn the shutout. Both athletes were named to Daily Faceoff’s PWHL Players of the Week.
