Contract terminations may become a trend after Alexandre Texier’s success in Montreal

The Montreal Canadiens have seen 25 games of forward Alexandre Texier, and they opted to sign him to a two-year contract extension after acquiring him in an unusual manner.
Texier was struggling to catch on earlier this season with the St. Louis Blues, and rather than Texier stick it out to earn his salary in a place where he wasn’t a fit, Texier and the Blues opted to mutually terminate his contract, giving Texier the chance to pick his spot for a fresh start and providing St. Louis with roster and salary cap flexibility.
The French Olympian has 16 points in 25 appearances in Montreal, as he’s provided crucial secondary scoring for a young team with hopes of making a run in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
On Wednesday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, host Tyler Yaremchuk and co-host and former NHL goaltender Carter Hutton discussed why we could see more of these scenarios unfolding after it worked out well for all parties involved in this instance.
Tyler Yaremchuk: Remember two months ago [Texier] mutually terminated his contract with the St. Louis Blues, and he had $2.1 million left on that deal… This is another guy who we saw take that plunge of giving up on [his] guaranteed money for the rest of the year… He wanted out of St. Louis. It wasn’t a fit; he cleared waivers, all that stuff. He goes to Montreal, instantly finds second life and gets rewarded with a big deal. I think this is a trend we could see more and more as we head throughout the next couple of seasons.
Carter Hutton: I love it too. Just opting out of that to get that deal, and good for him, right? To go into this situation and play well, 25 games, 16 points in Montreal… He’s always been known for his skill when he was in Columbus… You’ve got to bet on yourself.
