The Detroit Red Wings are off to a solid start to the NHL season with a 9-7-0 record that has them fifth place in the Atlantic Division.

As the Wings look to snap a lengthy playoff drought this year, there’s no doubt that Steve Yzerman will look to be active on the trade market to both bolster the current roster and add to his impressive stockpile of young talent and assets.

He’ll have a decision to make in goal, as backup Cam Talbot could be more valuable to other teams than he is to Detroit serving as John Gibson’s backup.

On Thursday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, host Tyler Yaremchuk and co-host and former NHL goaltender Carter Hutton were joined by NHL insider David Pagnotta to discuss whether or not Talbot could be an intriguing target for a goalie-needy contender.

Carter Hutton: I heard you yesterday talk about Cam Talbot on the DFO Show. Is he a piece that gets moved? I thought he was a piece that was going to get moved last year. I remember Petr Mrazek getting moved to the Wings, and I thought for sure Cam Talbot’s getting moved out. It didn’t happen. Where does he fit?

David Pagnotta: Unless there’s a season-ending injury or something of relative significance in that respect, I think this is going to be a situation where team’s are going to wait to see A. how they’re doing and B. how the Wings are doing. Is there an opportunity to pounce on a veteran goaltender who’s got that experience? Numbers aren’t horrible by any stretch in Detroit, but he doesn’t have any no-trade protection, and with John Gibson there, is this an avenue that Steve Yzerman is willing to take?
