Two NHL players placed on waivers for Nov. 18

Two new names were placed on the NHL waiver wire on Tuesday, as the Pittsburgh Penguins waived forward Philip Tomasino while their cross-state rival Philadelphia Flyers waived defenseman Maxence Guenette.
The other teams in the league will have a chance to place claims on them, and they will either be assigned to the AHL or to their new clubs on Wednesday at 2:00 PM EST.
The Flyers acquired Guenette, who was previously a restricted free agent, in a trade with the Ottawa Senators on Monday that sent defenseman Dennis Gilbert to Ottawa. The Flyers signed Guenette to a one-year, two-way contract after the deal, and their goal is to add him to the roster for their AHL affiliate Lehigh Valley Phantoms.
Guenette, a 24-year-old who has eight games of NHL experience under his belt, had 23 points in 58 games with the Belleville Senators a year ago. The right-handed shot was a seventh-round pick by Ottawa in the 2019 NHL Draft who turned pro after a strong junior career with the QMJHL’s Val-d’Or Foreurs.
Tomasino was a first-round pick at No. 24 overall in the 2019 draft by the Nashville Predators. He was traded to Pittsburgh last November in exchange for a fourth-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft.
After getting off to a strong start as a depth forward with his new team last year, Tomasino has struggled to replicate the same success this year. He put up 23 points in his 50 appearances with the Penguins a year ago, but he’s mustered just one assist in nine games this time around.
The Penguins and Flyers are both off to stronger-than-expected starts to their respective campaigns. Pittsburgh is in third place in the Metropolitan Division with a 10-5-4 record, while Philadelphia has gone 9-6-3 and is squarely in the wild card hunt.
