NHLPA releases 2023 salary arbitration hearing dates

This morning, the National Hockey League Players Association (NHLPA) announced the dates for this summer’s salary arbitration hearings. 23 players are slated for hearings, including the 22 players who elected arbitration last week. Some of those names include Anaheim Ducks forward Troy Terry, Seattle Kraken defenseman Vince Dunn, and Toronto Maple Leafs netminder Ilya Samsonov.
Salary arbitration in the NHL is a process where a restricted free agent or a team can request a hearing to determine the player’s salary for the upcoming season. Both sides have two weeks to negotiate before the scheduled hearing. If an agreement is not reached, an arbitration hearing will take place, where a neutral arbitrator will weigh the dispute between the player and team. The arbitrator has 48 hours to make a decision. However, if no agreement is reached following the hearing, the player becomes an unrestricted free agent.
While a player can request any amount, the player’s salary can not be lower than 85% of the previous year’s salary. But, the team can walk away from the arbitration decision if a contract with an average annual value of more than $4.54 million is granted.
