It’s no surprise that Canucks are already looking to sell

The Vancouver Canucks have been one of the larger disappointments to this point in the NHL season. In a year in which almost every team has stayed close to the playoff race, the Canucks are one of just four teams in the West below NHL .500.

At 9-12-2 and in the midst of a three-game losing streak, NHL insider Frank Seravalli reported that Vancouver’s front office sent the other 31 teams a memo that their veteran players are available on the trade market.

While many of the team’s more experienced players have some degree of trade protection, Patrik Allvin and Jim Rutherford will look to assess the market and see which of their players are expendable, as well as whether or not any who have the option to block trades would be willing to waive such protection to pursue a Stanley Cup.

On Wednesday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, host Tyler Yaremchuk and co-host and former NHL goaltender Carter Hutton were joined by Jeff Paterson of Cancuks Army to discuss the reality facing the Canucks that they will need to move on from whatever veterans they can in order to add on future assets.

Tyler Yaremchuk: A handful of reports over the past couple of days that the Canucks are open for business. A lot of their veterans can be had. I want to start with the timing of this. It’s the end of November. What did you make of this all coming out at this point in the season?

Jeff Paterson: The timing doesn’t strike me. The Canucks were dreadful on Sunday at home against the Calgary Flames who had played the night before. The Flames come in and skated circles around the Canucks in their own building… The fan base is getting restless. I think it sort of all came home to roost on Sunday that if you can’t even compete with the Calgary Flames, what are we doing here? This is a flawed team. It was poorly constructed… Yeah, they’ve had injuries, but injuries are happening around the National Hockey League.
