UPDATE (5:02 PM ET): The Power Play Hockey Instagram account no longer lists Patrick as being retired. According to Skylar Peters from Global Winnipeg, Patrick’s family has said Patrick has not officially announced his retirement as of yet.

Original story:

Nolan Patrick, the 2017 No. 2 overall pick whose career was marred with injuries, has reportedly retired from professional hockey at the age of 25.

The news was revealed in an Instagram post for The Power Play, a hockey coaching and mentorship program organized by Jayce Hawryluk, who currently plays for Liberec Bili Tygri in the Czech Extraliga, the highest pro league in Czechia. Patrick will be a skills specialist, video coach and a mentor for the group.

Patrick, who scored 91 goals and 113 assists for 204 points in three seasons with the Brandon Wheat Kings of the Western Hockey League, missed most of his draft season, 2016-17, with sports hernia and upper-body injuries. Despite missing most of the regular season, Patrick was ranked the No. 1 North American skater by NHL Central Scouting.

The Philadelphia Flyers took Patrick with the second-overall pick in that 2017 NHL Entry Draft. During his rookie season, he scored 13 goals and 17 assists for 30 points, almost replicating the numbers in his sophomore season with 13 goals and 18 assists for 31 points.

Before the 2019-20 season, Patrick began to feel headaches and was diagnosed with a migraine disorder, believed to be an inherited genetic disorder. He would miss the entire season.

He would be cleared to play for 2020-21 and dress for 52 of the Flyers’ 56 games, scoring four goals and five assists for nine points. After the season, Patrick was traded to the Nashville Predators in exchange for Ryan Ellis, then immediately flipped to the Vegas Golden Knights in exchange for Cody Glass. He would sign a two-year, $2.4 million contract.

Only playing 25 games with the club in 2021-22, Patrick scored two goals and five assists for seven points, and would be sidelined for most of the season with an upper-body injury.

Patrick would miss the entire 2022-23 season, not meeting the requirements to have his name engraved on the Stanley Cup after the Golden Knights won it. He was awarded with a Stanley Cup ring, however.

Through four NHL seasons, Patrick scored 32 goals and 45 assists for 77 points in 222 career games. In six playoff games, he scored one goal and one assist for two points.
