Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid set up a goal by winger Zach Hyman late in the first period of Monday’s game against the Los Angeles Kings to reach the 90-point mark for the eighth consecutive season.

McDavid became the eighth player in NHL history to record eight 90-point seasons in a row, joining Wayne Gretzky, Mike Bossy, Jari Kurri, Dale Hawerchuk, and Marcel Dionne.

The 27-year-old center helped the Oilers capitalize off a turnover by Kings forward Pierre-Luc Dubois in the final minute of the first period on Monday, taking control of the puck in the high slot before setting up Hyman’s 38th goal of the season.

McDavid now has 21 goals and 69 assists for exactly 80 points in 54 games this year. He entered Monday’s action without a goal in his previous nine games, joking earlier in the day that he’s “not going to shoot the puck anymore.”

The Oilers and Kings are currently tied at two after two periods of play at Rogers Place in Edmonton.

Like Kurri, Hawerchuk, and Dionne before him, McDavid has now scored at least 90 points in exactly eight consecutive seasons. Bossy achieved the feat nine years in a row; Gretzky did so in 13 consecutive seasons, from 1979-80 to 1991-92.

The Oilers originally selected McDavid with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2015 NHL Draft. The Richmond Hill, Ontario product set new career highs in the 2022-23 season with 64 goals and 153 points in 82 games; however, the Oilers ultimately bowed out to the Vegas Golden Knights in the second round of the playoffs.

Through 623 career games over nine NHL seasons spent with the Oilers, McDavid has collected 324 goals and 940 points. He’s added 29 goals and 75 points in 49 games over five playoff appearances with the team.

The Oilers currently rank third in the Pacific Division with a 33-20-2 record and 68 points in 55 games this season. Although their playoff berth is likely safe, the Oilers are just two points up on the Nashville Predators for the final wild card spot in the Western Conference.
